Keys do not scale
Mechanical keys have three problems: you cannot tell who used one, you cannot reliably get one back, and losing a master means rekeying the building. Every organization eventually reaches the size where that stops being acceptable — usually the week after somebody leaves on bad terms.
We build door access on Ubiquiti UniFi Access, the same platform family as the cameras, phones and network we install. Credentials are issued and revoked instantly, doors unlock on a schedule instead of relying on whoever arrives first, and every entry is logged. Do we need to replace our doors?
Usually not the doors, but the hardware often needs upgrading — strikes, maglocks or electrified levers depending on the door and the fire code requirements for that opening.
